Lithium-ion Battery History
While working for Exxon Research & Engineering Company from 1972 until 1984, Manley Stanley Whittingham discovered the concept of intercalation electrodes which lead to Exxon commercializing the first rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
Around the same time, a man by the name of John Goodenough used lithium cobalt oxide as the material for constructing the positive electrode and lithium metal for the negative electrode which helped to make the new technology possible. It was the stability and simplicity of these two materials which made a range of rechargeable battery systems viable.
